Advocacy Group Claims to Have Extracted Countless of Music Tracks from Spotify

A digital rights organization has stated to have scraped millions of songs from Spotify and is preparing to publish them publicly.

Potential Boost for Artificial Intelligence Development

Industry experts noted the seeming leak could aid artificial intelligence firms looking for data to train their technology.

An entity known as Anna’s Archive reported it had scraped 86 million music files from the platform and 256 million rows of associated data such as performer and record names. The company, which carries more than 100 million tracks, confirmed that the breach did not constitute its entire catalog.

“We have identified and deactivated the malicious user accounts that engaged in illegal scraping,” said a Spotify spokesperson.

The Stockholm-based service, which has more than 700 million subscribers worldwide, further explained that an inquiry into unauthorised access found a external actor scraped public metadata and used questionable methods to circumvent DRM protections.

Archive's Declared Mission and Worries

Spotify does not think the music acquired by Anna’s Archive has been made public yet. Anna’s Archive, which is known for offering links to copyright-infringing books, said in a blog it wanted to create a ‘preservation archive’ for music.

The group asserted the music files accounted for 99.6% of all music listened to by its listeners and would be shared via ‘peer-to-peer networks’, a method of exchanging large data files online.

“Naturally Spotify doesn’t have all the music in the world, but it’s a great beginning,” commented Anna’s Archive, which frames its mission as “preserving humanity’s knowledge and culture”.

AI Training and Intellectual Property Debate

Ed Newton-Rex for protecting artists’ copyright, remarked the breached music would probably be used for training artificial intelligence systems.

“Educating models on illegally sourced material is sadly widespread in the AI industry, so this accessed music is almost certain to end up instructing AI models,” he stated.

The group's website alludes to a large online archive, a huge online archive of copyrighted books that has reportedly been leveraged by Meta to train its AI models.

The co-founder of an artificial intelligence company wrote on the professional network that individuals of the public could in theory “build their own personal free equivalent of the service”. The executive added it could also allow technology firms to “train on modern music at scale”.

Copyright has emerged as a battleground between artists, authors and creatives on one side and tech giants on the other.

Policy Proposals and Reactions

Across Britain, creative professionals have protested against a ministerial proposal to allow AI companies utilize copyright-protected work without consent unless the owner opts out. Virtually every participant to a government call for evidence on the idea has backed artists’ concerns.

A government minister for science, research and development told parliament this month there was “no clear consensus” on the issue, adding that ministers would “use the time to get this correct”. The administration has committed to make policy proposals on AI and copyright by next year.
