Antony Price, Renowned for Styling David Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential style architect who crafted a series of unforgettable images worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, including the soft-colored suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."
His passing follows less than a month after he debuted his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the famous black velvet "dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Lasting Legacy
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping body-hugging looks made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included several ensembles for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
