Arne Slot Maintains He Is Safe and Has Liverpool's Backing Following PSV Eindhoven Defeat
Arne Slot conceded that it was understandable for doubts to be asked about his position following another convincing loss against the Dutch champions.
Liverpool endured their ninth defeat in twelve matches, representing the club's worst streak after being relegated in 1953-54.
They were taken apart by the Dutch league champions on a difficult night at their home ground.
“I feel secure, I am OK, I've received significant backing from the top,” the coach stated.
“It's important to turn it around and secure a win obviously but when you're coaching a team and struggling then it's typical that doubts arise.”
He noted, “I accept my role. This isn't the first time I've found myself in a difficult position but it is about time that we changed our fortunes.”
Talks with The Board
Upon being questioned to elaborate on his discussions with the Liverpool hierarchy, the head coach said:
“There's regular dialogue. They assist for the squad and to me and those talks happen but they aren't calling me every single minute of the day to say they back me.”
He mentioned, “Through standard conversations we have I feel the confidence. However I've not talked to them after this defeat so far so we'll see.”
Persistent Failings and Player Response
Slot expressed regret over familiar weaknesses from his squad in their Champions League loss, namely poor finishing and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, midfielder Jones was more direct in his assessment of the team's situation.
“I don’t have the answers. Frankly, I do not. I'm telling that to everybody,” the midfielder remarked.
“It is unacceptable. I don’t even have to wait to consider it. I'm beyond feeling anger inside. I’m at the point currently where I just don’t have the phrases.”
He continued, “It's tough because I’m playing for the team I support. I'm a supporter, and I’ve seen this club for years.”
“In a long, long time, I've not seen a Liverpool team enduring a phase like this with outcomes like these.”
Jones stated, “However we still have the crest on our shirts. And as long as it is taken away, we’re always going to fight.”
“We’re going to try to get this team back to the top, prove again what this club is about and why people call it the best team in the planet.”
“However currently, we're in trouble and we have to turn it around.”
