After a definitive runoff election, hardline politician José Antonio Kast has secured the presidency in Chile.

A Commanding Triumph

After over 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast won 58.17% of the ballots, defeating leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.

This signifies Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having earlier been defeated by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.

Agenda Centered On Security and Migration

Noted for his staunch Catholic views and praise for the period of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was largely built on promises to tackle increasing insecurity and radically reduce immigration.

He consistently pointed to migrants, especially the approximately 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for crime rates. Throughout the campaign, he gave an final demand for them to depart before the March 11 handover or face removal.

His proposals featured U.S.-style measures such as erecting detention centers, barriers, security fences, and bolstering the armed forces presence on the northern border.

Part of a Broader Trend

Many analysts interpret Kast's win as aligning with a larger conservative shift in the region, similar to recent electoral wins in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

However, other analysts also view it as a continuation of the predictable swing of power between left-wing and right-wing leadership since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.

Governing Without a Clear Mandate

Despite his sweeping popular vote victory, Kast is not expected to hold an absolute majority in the legislature, not in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even if all rightwing parties are grouped together.

This legislative landscape may challenge his agenda, such as a promise to reduce public spending by $6 billion within 18 months—a proposal for which he has yet to offered specifics.

"There are several aspects about what a Kast administration will look like that we don't know because he has not said his methods for achieve them," commented a political science analyst.

The analyst stated, "In terms of fiscal matters, it is almost certain we will see austerity policies typical of the right-wing. However where there is much less ambiguity is on law and order, because that has been his workhorse throughout the campaign."
