Information Available About the Fatalities of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 people were killed and in excess of 40 were wounded when assailants fired on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police have labeled a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were admitted to the hospital.

The deceased have not yet been publicly named, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the victims who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with a number in a critical state. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
