Sheff Wed Deals with Major Issues, Says New Football Authority

'Our role is integral to football's future' - football oversight chief the new chairman

The Championship club's persistent issues constitute a "major concern" and the independent regulator is looking to gain the ability to look into club affairs in comparable cases, its new chair the regulator has stated.

In a wide-ranging interview, the chairman, who was appointed on Monday, expressed "sympathy" towards the club's followers.

Kogan met with four supporter groups connected to the South Yorkshire club recently.

The Championship side have been facing challenges both on and off the pitch in 2025, with the club missing wage payments on several different times, including in last month.

"Obviously the club has become a major concern for the league and a major challenge for the sport," Kogan told.

"Wednesday stands as one of the iconic names for football in England and in recent days we have met Sheffield Wednesday supporters' groups.

"We are seeking authority... which will permit us to bring Wednesday and comparable cases brought to our attention if they warrant scrutiny and dealt with."

Economic Challenges and Leadership Concerns

The club's controversial proprietor Dejphon Chansiri stated during the off-season he would be prepared to relinquish control at the stadium, but he has failed to complete a sale with prospective buyers.

Missed wage deadlines on time in spring months resulted in restrictions being imposed by the English Football League (EFL) in summer, preventing the club from carrying out any player acquisitions for the following recruitment periods, although the ban was rescinded in late summer.

Official's Viewpoint

The regulator explained: "The position was created for the fans of Sheffield Wednesday, Bury or any football club where people are committed to a regional establishment that has represented their community in numerous instances.

"I fully appreciate Sheffield Wednesday, as I do for all the clubs that over recent decades have faced collapse, or approached financial ruin, for causes separate from the followers."

Inquired if the authority might compel an chairman to relinquish a club if they are considered unfit, the regulator answered: "Should the inquiry concern 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the answer is once we gather the evidence and comprehend the circumstances, we will."

But the chairman emphasized that requiring chairmen to relinquish clubs would be considered the final option and the authority would rather to cooperate with proprietors.

"The last thing what we want to do is commence engagement with an particular organization, an specific proprietor, without being able to work with that proprietor to address the problems affecting the organization and the proprietor's dealing with," the regulator explained.

"In actuality, when you examine the past of the sport, over the recent generations there have been certain proprietors, a small minority, but certain individuals who have acted carelessly in the approach they have taken toward their teams and eventually refuse to accept accountability for the long-term prospects."

'Errors may undo substantial development'

The regulator engaged officials from numerous teams to detail the scope of the authority recently and stated it constituted a "progressive gathering" with a "high level of engagement" from the lower divisions to the top flight.

"It's a job that's actually really important, because if we get it wrong, if the world of football gets it wrong, the extraordinary progress that's been made could disappear swiftly," Kogan said.

"And that's what nobody wants in the realm of domestic football is a major achievement - we've got to keep it going.

"There's an enormous amount of money flowing into the game and has come into football for the recent generations, because there's no guarantee it will continue to come into football, which is among the factors explaining I think we have to maintain a focused outlook on risk and of course, of the immediate future."

Premier League Concerns

Top flight officials resisted the establishment of an oversight body because of apprehensions regarding adverse consequences on the top-flight's competitiveness, but Kogan said: "I completely endorse the prosperity and expansion as an economic entity of the elite league.

"I of all people understand the apprehension regarding damaging the Premier League as a premium product of England. But simultaneously, if you talk to the Premier League after this week's discussion, they would have had a high level of reassurance -and, actually, they have been telling us in private they have a considerable comfort."

Ideological Links

Kogan is still facing a "comprehensive investigation" by the public appointments commissioner after he revealed he contributed money to the opposition group in 2020.

The 68-year-old contributed funds to government minister the minister's leadership bid, along with that of the current Prime Minister.

"I've been completely open about my former ideological connection [with Labour], and that party membership ceased the day the select committee approved my appointment," the chairman stated.

"I currently have no participation in any type of partisan engagement."
