The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller Merging Survival Horror with Social Deduction Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several intriguing future games, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive game where a girl containing several human souls inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct personas, all possessing unique anxieties and motivations. These entities can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her suddenly.
Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy medical facility, while additional clips depict the main character navigating a desolate chapel.
An Environment of Individual Horror
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are unique to every individual."
The central mechanic involves controlling whichever soul surfaces at a particular time. However, these identities will switch against your will as you play. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the protagonist in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Decision
Initially, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the waiting room have enormous blooms where their necks are. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four souls claims that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."
Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, because each soul can lie or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The last one standing might be a fraud. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
