The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Track

The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new opening credits. It showcases the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at multiple agonizing personal histories for characters including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.

Overall, the intro looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the song choice.

This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song created by artist the talented musician. It's a track from the official score of the same name, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will love its presence.

Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the excitement and energy that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in the later year.

Including singing from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes for me. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.

Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the series will have some surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its intro appears as one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and YouTube.
