The people of Israel observe two-year remembrance of 7 October incident as Gaza peace talks advance
Citizens have assembled throughout the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-conducted assault on 7 October 2023, as discussions proceeded in Egypt over a conclusion to the war in Gaza.
The attack saw in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as captives. It was the single deadliest day for Jewish people since the Second World War.
Israel answered by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are considered trustworthy by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"The bloodthirsty opponents have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on that day.
He also promised to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will not present a threat to Israel".
Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed official memorials until mid-October - after the completion of the festive season - but events still were held throughout the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of Israelis who died in the Hamas attack was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was televised on Israeli broadcast stations.
Some time earlier, a moment of silence was observed throughout the country.
Peace Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' delegations met in the North African coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of third-party negotiations to examine the provisions of the agreement.
A prominent delegate involved in the talks revealed that an evening round of mediated discussions began at 19:00 Cairo time.
The official stated the morning session concluded without significant progress, amid conflicting views over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not resume combat after the opening period of the arrangement.
He added that the talks are "tough and have yet to deliver any significant progress," but noted that intermediaries are working hard to reduce the disparities between the conflicting groups.
Essential Issues in Talks
- A permanent halt to fighting
- The trade of the hostages still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance provision
- After-conflict management of the region
Civilian Feeling
In the city's public square that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member survived the incident on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were murdered and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - shared: "No location appears as home anymore and until all the hostages are released not a single person will have peace of mind."
"When we see all home again, we can feel relief anew. Then we can commence heal," she continued.
Near the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people assembled to show their support for the relatives of the abducted. Israel states 48 stay in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be alive.
Protester Atalia Regev stated: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement needed for the abducted to be released. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be secure."
Surveys now frequently demonstrate that around the majority of Israeli citizens want the hostilities to end in return for the release of the hostages.
Palestinian Situation
At the area of the music event, mourners assembled to remember the victims.
From the site, the boom of military attacks and shelling could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses said the heavy Israeli bombardment carried on.
In the main city, bombardments were reported in the morning of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and locality districts and in the east side area of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the north-west.
"When the night comes, the dread arrives with it," displaced urban resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli air strike previously, described.
"We are terrified of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are lying together, holding each other, notably my youngest child who puts his face on me all night."
"Constantly we check the news to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be completed and that the fighting will come back to us."
Health Emergency
The medical facility in the urban area said it had accepted the remains of several people by the midday, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Another medical facility in the southern city of the city reported two more dead people had been brought there. An individual was killed by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get help to the south region, health workers reported.
