Thousands Gather at First Israeli Funeral After Hostage Bodies Came Back

As Michel Illouz slowly made his way through the throngs beneath the cypress trees and date palms at the burial ground in Ra'anana, a city located about 21 km north of Tel Aviv, he expressed gratitude to numerous participants as he could.

Earlier he provided an open call to the nation's citizens to join his family in mourning his twenty-six-year-old son, Guy, whose body had been brought back from Gaza on Monday.

Massive Turnout

Numerous people answered the call. They filled the roads, processed behind the coffin transport carrying his mortal coil, and arrived at the cemetery in such substantial amounts that the original plan to conduct the memorial indoors had to be discarded.

As an alternative, the ceremony was conducted outside, accompanied by the chorus of birdsong.

Notable Occasion

This represented the first funeral since the remaining 20 living hostages came back from Gaza, together with seven bodies. A further more than twenty of the fallen captives remain missing, but at minimum this family now had a specific place to express sorrow and commemorate their son, according to close acquaintances.

Sorrowful Account

Guy Illouz, a musician and recording specialist, had been shot in the back at the Nova musical gathering during the Hamas assault on October 7, 2023. Earlier that morning, he had contacted his father from a concealed location to express his love; to say goodbye. He was seized, and based on those captured simultaneously, he subsequently passed away from his trauma due to lack of treatment.

Family Perspective

A close acquaintance of the Illouz household, Michelle, fifty years old, commented that it had been crucial to them that people attended today. The Illouz relatives, comprising Guy's female relatives and male sibling, had practiced the mourning period, the extended period of grieving, after being informed of his passing in December of the year before. But now that Guy was at long last back with them, they desired "supportive individuals again."

"My spirit is uplifted that you came," expressed Michel. "Your presence is deeply appreciated."

Dad's Eulogy

He addressed his son. "My dear Guy," he expressed, using a term of endearment, "it's hard for me to imagine the future without you. They took you from me – they killed you – they captured my essence and robbed my persona and destroyed my spirit and feelings."

"I've been left hollow since that senseless shooting by those vicious attackers when they apprehended you and told you to turn around, and then just discharged two needless bullets into your back."

Final Goodbye

"So I found myself this morning, traveling to Abu Kabir forensic institute to confirm your identity and say goodbye. They unveiled the shroud, and the primary view I saw was that familiar expression, that hopeful nature, that peaceful presence and grace that so exemplified you."

"I reached out, tried to sense your aroma, gently felt each part in your body. I saw you, I was alone with you, and yes, I felt with absolute certainty that it was you. Yes, I know, Guy-shuk, that you've come back home. You've returned to your family's embrace, to all your friends, and to the numerous individuals whose hearts your narrative impacted."

Familial Courage

In the beginning phase of the memorial, Illouz had focused entirely on supporting his younger children. He stroked the hair of his daughters, supported his male child, demonstrated love and maintained composure for them. But then his emotions surfaced.

Treasured Recollections

"I'll miss so much traveling with you through this nation, feeling you, enjoying your artistic creations, sitting in the hills and activating the stove to prepare the beverage the way only you understood – 'Papa, do you see the coffee froth? You have to heat it slowly, let the bubbles form, then boil it again. Stir the coffee with rotating movements' – and then your expression while sipping the coffee and your pleasure in every particular taste."

"Prior to my departure Abu Kabir today, I fulfilled my commitment. I observed you, inhaled your essence one ultimate occasion, and yes, I bestowed affection on the forehead. I was able to see your attractiveness even in the condition in which you were repatriated."

Ultimate Expression

"My dear son, I adore you completely, I cherish you. I will long for you every instant and brief period of my time. Find peace, my dear child, repose after a journey of multiple seasons through worlds unknown to us. I care for you, my dear Guy, my beloved firstborn son."
