Why Los Blancos Have 'Total Confidence' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch

Thiago Pitarch in action
Thiago Pitarch has played seven games for the Spanish giants, featuring five starts.

When an 18-year-old makes Real Madrid a historic moment in a pivotal Champions League match against City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.

In only his first start in the tournament - and fifth game for the club - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the 15-time European champions secured a three-nil last-16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to secure a quarter-final place.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vini Jr's record by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent Through The Academy

The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.

He joined Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

He progressed to the reserve side and it was during a pre-season game in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced the previous coach in January.

Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting he stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and drive he added to the side.

'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'

During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso invited the youngster to train with the first team and awarded him minutes during the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was the change in manager that became the turning point in his development as he came on as a late substitute in each leg against Benfica that led to the meeting with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing football, every day you head to training and every day you play a match," said the player after his debut.

"I've just achieved my ambition with the best team in the planet and in the top tournament."

Given a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he was for four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his place for the following four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opportunity.

The teenager has taken it with displays that have defied his youth and inexperience.

"He's a extremely fast player, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He is extremely dynamic, with great endurance, work-rate and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his manager.

"His greatest quality is his character," continued he. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand people are surprised to see him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to do what he usually does.

"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the first team. It is delightful to have a player like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, progressing through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's renowned youth academy.

He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, giving him the choice to play for either country at senior international level.

Under international regulations, footballers may represent different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a official full international.

Pitarch has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and U20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to any full national side, who are monitoring his rise with interest.

Speaking recently, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision yet. Things are great with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a decision soon."

His situation echoes that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas teenage Lamine chose Spain, Diaz opted to represent the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He played over an hour in the two-one win at the Etihad, which sealed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich.

He was replaced by another academy player in Manuel Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in younger players to aid the club pursue future success.

Following his notable contributions so far on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.

"The manager handles me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I try not to overanalyze it too much - I must earn my playing time on the pitch," he said following the success at Manchester.
